Elementary Reading Olympics

The goal of Reading Olympics is to increase students' reading for enjoyment and to promote reading achievement.  Students collaborate with their team to read thirty books that have been selected by a committee of elementary librarians.  The librarians read the books and write the questions which teams of students will be asked to answer during the competition.  All participants are awarded a certificate.

Responsibilities of Student Participants

Students should read a minimum of five (5) books with librarian discretion from the current year's list and complete a graphic organizer. The graphic organizers are turned in to the librarian at each building. Graphic organizers will be returned one (1) month prior to the event. 

Competition Rules

  1. The Elementary Competition is for grades 4 and 5
  2. Teams may be composed of eight (8) to twelve (12) students.
  3. Schools may have as many teams as needed, depending on the number of participants. 
  4. The teams will be asked as many questions as possible in the time provided. There will be a minimum of 30 questions. The maximum is 90 questions.
  5. During the competition, each team will be able to answer every question using Activote, system for answering. Teams will have the opportunity to change their answer for that question until the moderator calls time.
  6. At the end of the competition, the moderator will review the data collected by Activote software.  The Activote software maintains records of each teams' answers and averages the percentage correct.
  7. Parents may attend the competition as spectators. Please, no small children. Spectators may not interfere in the questioning or scoring process.
  8. No paper, pencils, food, drink or books are permitted at the competition. Only bottled water is permitted.
