ELD is a program that is designed for students whose primary language is not English.
It assists and /or increases the English learner’s proficiency of speaking and understanding English in the school setting and in his/her everyday living environment.
The ELD program assists students with reading, writing, speaking, and listening of the English language.
The Functions of ELD
An ELD teacher works with students in large and small groups to help develop their language proficiency.
Students work at their own pace within their appropriate instructional level.
ELD helps students adjust and feel more comfortable in a new country and culture.
ELD reinforces English skills being taught in the classroom.
Classroom teachers and ESL/ESOL teachers collaborate on planning instruction, grading, monitoring progress, and providing accommodation for student’s success.
ELD teacher advocates for the rights of students and parents.
