Exit Policy
RECLASSIFICATION (EXIT) CRITERIA FOR PENNSYLVANIA'S ENGLISH LEARNERS
An English Learner (EL) must demonstrate the ability to access challenging academic content and interact with other students and teachers both academically and socially in an English language setting in order to be considered for reclassification. Evidence of this ability is demonstrated by the student on the annual English language proficiency assessment, ACCESS for ELLs, and gathered by teachers using standardized language use inventories.
REQUIRED RECLASSIFICATION (EXIT) CRITERIA:
1st Requirement: Language Use Inventories
Two language use inventories must be completed, preferably one by an ESL teacher and one by a classroom or content area teacher. These inventories are in the form of rubics that measure the student's English Language Development in Listening, Speaking, Reading, and Writing.
2nd Requirement: WIDA ACCESS 2.0 for ELLs Points
Overall Composite Score Reclassification Points
4.5 - 4.7 3.6
4.8 - 5.0 4.5
5.1 - 5.3 5.8
> 5.3 8.4
Each language use inventory produces a single score, and the sum of the two inventory scores is added to the ACCES for ELLs points assigned to determine if the student meets the minimum threshold for reclassification.
Special Circumstances:
ELs with IEPs - taking the ACCESS for ELLs
An EL with an IEP may be considered for reclassification, if expected criteria is met.
ELs with IEPs - taking the Alternate ACCESS for ELLs
ELs who are eligible for and take the Alternate ACCESS for ELLs may be considered for reclassification, if expected criteria is met.
EASD Notes:
When students reclassify (exit) it will be noted in their academic folder. As per federal requirements, students will be monitored for 4 years after reclassifying in order to chart continued progress.
