Health Room

March School's nursing staff consists of a certified school nurse, Annie Marans, RN.  The health room staff provides health services to students and their families that promote physical and emotional well-being.

    A few examples include:

        * First aid

        * medications administration

        * health teaching

        * referral to community resources

        * counseling and support

        * health screening

        * coordination of mandated exams

        * enforcement of immunizations code

The goal of our team approach is to secure and promote student health so that they may meet their optimal learning potential.

Medication Policy

    For students to take medicine, including "over-the-counter" medicines, during school hours:

  1. 1.Complete and return EASD's MEDICATION AUTHORIZATION FORM that provides the nurse with doctor's prescription AND parent/guardian permission to administer the medicine.

  2. 2.Bring the medication in its original container to the nurse's office.   Children MAY NOT transport the medicine to school per district policy.  A 20 day supply of tablets will be accepted.

  3. 3.Parents will be notified to refill the medicinal supply, as needed, and will receive notification at end of the year to pick up any remaining meds by the last day of school before they are discarded.

Examinations

    PA law requires a kindergarten physical exam as well as dental examinations for students in grades one and three.  A school dentist and a school physician are available to assess your child if you do not have a private doctor.   Health Care Provider lists are available in the nurse's office.  Please return your preference form to the nurse ASAP.

Immunizations

    DPT, Polio, MMR (measles/mumps/rubella) and Hepatitis B vaccines are required for all students.  Chicken pox vaccine or proof of illness is required for kindergarten entry.  Please have your child immunized accordingly and send a record with the exact dates of vaccines to the school nurse.  If your child is exempt from immunizations due to religious or medical reasons, you child may be removed from school during a disease outbreak.  There is a provisional admittance period for students who are not in compliance with PA regulations, before exclusion from school is enforced.

Health Room Myths

  1. It is a school nurse's duty to keep a sick child in the Health Room all day.

  2. School nurses can read minds.  We know exactly what "I feel sick" means and precisely what action parents want us to take.

  3. School nurses have X-ray vision.

  4. School nurses are experts on rashes, knee injuries, medications and all other health topics from A-Z.

  5. School nurses aren't "real" nurses.
