Take a Reading Road Trip -  Cheston

“Take a Reading Road Trip” was this Spring’s theme for the Cheston PTA book fair.  A family literacy night was held to coincide with the book fair.  This event showcased the importance of reading and writing with your children.  Approximately 50 families “traveled” in Cheston’s Gymnasium.  There were 4 literacy centers for each family to visit. The centers included Sentence Building Boulevard, Sight Word Bingo Road, African Safari Street and Reading Corner.  As the children completed each center their “road maps” were stamped.  When they finished their literacy road trip they entered in a drawing to win a grade level reading basket.  In addition, children could “build” their own book using an activity kit that was purchased at the book fair.  It was a fun night for everyone who attended.

A special thank you to Cheston’s teachers, PTA, and Family Connections for providing an enriching literacy night for the children and their families.

Cops and Kids with Radio Disney

On Friday March 7th the kids at Cheston Elementary School were treated to an energizing assembly focusing on the importance of reading, not only at school but also in their everyday lives.  The celebration involved movement, music, and verbal interaction between the performers and audience.

Members of the Radio Disney staff involved the entire student body by creating Mad Libs.  The Mad Libs were created from nursery rhymes.  Words within the nursery rhymes were changed to create funny lyrics.  The new rhyme was set to music and sung out loud with the audience participating in the new creation.  Dancing and jumping around kept the audience actively involved throughout the hour plus performance.  Joining in on the fun were students from Northampton Community College, Pleasant Valley School District and Easton High School.

After the assembly, each classroom welcomed guest readers into their rooms. Readers were given an opportunity to read their favorite book to their host classroom and discuss what they read.  Books were also handed out to every child, thanks to a book drive, which took place at the Pleasant Valley School District.

Other attendees at this event included: Easton’s Mayor Sal Panto, and City Council Sandra Volcano, School Board President Dr. Pat Volcano, school board members Patricia Fisher and Kerri Leonard-Ellison, Easton Police Chief Larry Palmer and Captain Vangelo, Congressman Charlie Dent, Cops and Kids president Beverly Bradley, PSEA Rep. John Clark and EAEA President Kevin Deely.
