In response to many requests by teachers across all grade levels about how to increase their knowledge of teaching literacy, Mr. Shoemaker is currently working with East Stroudsburg University to begin a cohort of E.A.S.D. teachers in E.S.U’s Reading Specialist Certification program. The courses would be held on site here in the district to make it easier for teachers to attend. More details will follow soon!

READ ACROSS AMERICA

News from Team 7-6

Mr. Parrish’s classes are writing slave diaries.  Mrs. D’s classes are studying protists.   Ms. Barber’s classes have just finished writing persuasive essays.  Mr. Pinto’s classes are finally getting ready for the PSSA in Math.  Mrs. McColgan’s classes are improving their reading skills.

Nine Odyssey of the Mind teams from Easton schools will present their solutions this Saturday, March 8th at the Southeastern Pennsylvania Regional Tournament at Pennridge High School in Perkasie. We are fortunate to have outstanding parent and teacher coaches who have facilitated their team's work on the long-term problem and also in spontaneous problem solving. Student teams have worked many hours since the fall on their 8-minute performances and have learned critical thinking and problem-solving, creativity and "thinking outside the box," and teamwork. They have also learned planning, organization, and management skills as well as confidence in presenting their ideas. Everyone is cordially invited to attend the daylong tournament.

Students are continuing Study Island in their Math and English classes and took their final Math 4-sight test.  In Social Studies, students enjoyed a mini lesson celebrating Black History Month.  They will be watching The Ernest Green Story, which is about Little Rock Nine.  In Science, students enjoyed a lab where they found their speeds and reaction times and used the information to decide how far the walls should be from the out of bounds line on a basketball court.

Two students on our team recently competed in the Pennsylvania Junior Academy of Science competition.  Erik Ritter presented a project about the physics of Superballs and Philip Watters presented a project about the physics of a counterweight catapult.  Erik received a first place award and will be presenting his project at the state competition at Penn State University in May.  Philip received a second place award and has been invited to be a technician at the state competition.  Congratulations to both of these students!
