Cheston School Celebrates Veteran’s Day

On November 11, 2009, the staff and children celebrated Veteran’s Day by

wearing red, white, and blue.  The kindergarteners listened to a story about Veteran’s Day and viewed different uniforms worn by our military and were told abut each branch of the Armed Services.  Using handprints, the children then created a flag on which we listed family members who were veterans.  The first graders watched a United Steaming video on Veteran’s Day, read a book, and did a writing piece.  The third grade children enjoyed a presentation by Mr. Kies about the history and importance of the day with related topics like Arlington National Cemetery and The Tomb of the Unknown Soldier. He did this using the Promethean board to encourage interactive participation from the students and foster a deeper understanding of the facts.  After reading “The Wall” by Eve Bunting, the students wrote letters to veterans thanking them for their services and sacrifices.  The fourth graders studied the Star Spangled banner and interpreted the figurative used in this verse to determine how important our democracy is.

Last week, Merrielee Legath from the American Legion visited our faculty meeting and presented the teachers with certificates for our service and dedicated to the American education system.  She explained to us that her branch of the American Legion has adopted Cheston School for the year.  She read stories to the third and fourth grade children.  She also told us that they would be providing prizes for our Cougar Cart to promote good school-wide behavior.  We’d like to take this time to thank her and the American Legion for their support.

UGI Visits Cheston

On Tuesday, November 17th, the Cheston Gymatorium was the site of an exciting presentation by the National Energy Foundation (NEF) entitled, “Natural Gas - Fundamentals and Safety”.  The children were presented with facts about natural gas, how to use natural gas safely, and what to do in a natural gas emergency.  At the end of the presentation, the group played “Deal or No Deal” to review the concepts discussed during the lesson.  We would like to thank UGI and NEF for bringing this engaging lesson to Cheston Elementary School.

Special Education Department Update

As a part of our continued effort to increase awareness of special education supports and services for parents/guardians of children with disabilities, the Special Education Department would like to encourage parents/guardians to visit our special education website. We would also like to highlight this week a resource guide that can be found directly on our website under “Parent Resources”: “Pennsylvania’s Parent Guide to Special Education for School Aged Children” (download). This easy to read, parent-friendly brochure can be downloaded from our website. Additional special education resources for parents/guardians can be found directly at PaTTAN by visiting www.pattan.net and clicking on “Parent Information”.
