2009 - 2010

Easton Area School District

Susan McGinley, Superintendent

On Tuesday, November 24, approximately 500 members of the senior class joined the ranks of thousands of Easton graduates when they participated in our annual wood collecting and bonfire at the high school. For decades, seniors have braved the rain, the wind, the mud, and sometimes even the snow, to come together in a tradition that is uniquely Easton.

As their time together runs down, members of the Class of 2010 were obviously excited to finally have their chance at building a bigger bonfire than previous classes. Wood collecting is a rite of passage in Easton. Weeks are spent preparing as the senior class officers and senators contact businesses to donate wood and return phone calls from community members to schedule pick ups of donated wood. Finally, the week arrives and students line up outside as trucks pull in to the high school. Having seen it performed since they were freshmen, seniors know the drill: form two lines from the trucks to the bonfire site and start building. This year's seniors did such a great job building their bonfire, the Chrin Company felt it unnecessary to come in and push the pile together before lighting it. It truly is a time when it does not matter what classes you are in, what cliques you belong to, or what you plan to do after graduating. It is just the class coming together and working toward an objective.

Kudos to the core group of teachers who are outside chaperoning, organizing, and encouraging the students to work together and complete a task that defies what most communities would be able to pull off. We'd also like to thank those who volunteer their time after school and throughout the night as the seniors sleep out and protect their bonfire from the likes of P'burg students with flaming arrows. Finally we'd like to thank the administration for their support of this tradition. As the seniors move on, they will always share this experience, and will reminisce about their bonfire when they return to Easton for what is arguably our community's biggest holiday - Thanksgiving. Thank you again to all of those who help make this experience such a positive one for our students.

TRADITION @ EAHS

November Students of the Month (above) from EAMS 5/6

Team 8-4, "The Thrillers," congratulates our students of the month: Selena K. (Science), Carmen H. (History), Sim K. (Math) and Ashley B. (English).

Keep up the great work!

The entire 4th grade class was treated to visit by Tim Reily who is a school board member and a veteran of the War on Terror.  Mr. Reily talked about life in the armed services and told the children about several experiences that he had during his time overseas.  Then, the children got to ask Mr. Reily questions.  They really enjoyed this interactive part of the session.  The entire 4th grade would like to thank Mr. Reily for taking time to visit Cheston.

That’s Debatable!

The Debate Team hosted LVIAC Debate on Wednesday December 2, 2009. The day opened with remarks from Mr. William Rider. Students from Easton, Northampton, Nazareth, Bethlehem Catholic, and Freedom debated in classrooms at EAHS. This year the Debate Team is debating if Institutes of Higher Education should examine the public and private Internet to determine enrollment of prospective students. The Debate team is under the supervision of Mr. Jason Capone. The Debate team will head to Nazareth for their final debate on December 16.
