Periodically the ten schools in the Easton Area School District practice emergency planning through drills. In the past, these measures have been fire drills occurring monthly. Now these emergency measures include other simulated events, such as evacuation, locker searches, bomb/drug detecting, and lockdown measures. Often the municipal police departments assist these drills. Clearly it is not advisable to alert the community before these events occur. Emergency situations, by definition, are not predictable.
Today, May 28, 2008, a lockdown procedure was instituted at the Palmer Elementary School. This practice session helps everyone on the campus prepare in the event that an emergency would occur.

On Tuesday, March 11th, the Easton Area School District will be
instituting an Enhanced 911 system. Our fiber network and
infrastructure was designed not only to support our curricular goals,
IP telephony and business data, but it also allows us to use our
building connectivity to provide better response time and safety for
our students and staff in case an unfortunate incident or medical issue
should occur.
Cisco
Emergency Responder will help us manage emergency calls in our IP
telephony network so that we can respond to these calls effectively.
Enhanced 911 goes beyond basic 911 service.
With basic 911
service, when a call is placed from any extension in our schools, the
911 call center receives information regarding the main billing address
for that school only. In most cases, when authorities arrive, there is
no real way to know where the call came from within that building.
The
enhanced 911 solution provides the precise building address, extension
of the phone from which the call was made, and in most cases, the exact
location of the caller to the 911 operator. Additionally, on-site
first responders at each building (principals, school police, etc.) are
instantly notified of the location of the caller via a call to their
office phone, an email, and district cell phone. This is especially
critical when a student or staff member dials 911 and may not able to
identify his or her physical location. Help may not arrive at the
correct location until it is too late. It is our hope to eliminate
this kind of situation from occurring in our school district.
Along
with Connect-Ed, EASD alert, eCalendar, PowerSchool and our district
website, Enhanced 911 is one more way in which technology can help to
communicate and administer information to our students, staff and
community.
Sincerely, Thomas Drago, Director of Technology Easton Area School District
