Using QuotationsEach time you quote another writer - in other words, whenever you include in your paper what someone else has said or written - you must make these quotes obvious to your reader through the use of quotation marks or block indentation. However, a research paper should not be a patchwork quilt of other writers’ words sewn together with a few words or phrases of your own. You are the author of your paper. The words of other writers are used in two situations: a) to support a point you have already presented; b) to say something for the first time when the original is so memorable that a paraphrase or summary simply will not do. Remember that each use of another author’s words is a departure from the writing style that should dominate the paper yours. Every effort must be made to ensure that these departures are justified and to incorporate these changes into your text as smoothly as possible. 1.) Guidelines for Using Quotations 2.)
