During the 2008-2009 school year, 49.3% of students with special needs were included in the general education classroom setting. Today, 67.0% of students with disabilities are included. This is above the State target of 61.0%. It has taken the orchestrated efforts of the Special Education Department, our administrators within the buildings, and the talents and skills of both special and general educators working together, along with the supportive skills of our paraprofessional staff to make this happen.
While we have made substantial gains in the inclusion of students with disabilities in the general education classroom setting, there is truly more work to be done. While students with special needs had been serviced in more traditional learning support classrooms previously, their educational experiences today look much different. Where once our students were serviced with a special education teacher for the majority of their school day, the majority of them are now spending increased time in the general education classroom setting. Due in part to this effort (combined with the hard work and effort of our students), we have seen substantial gains in their PSSA performance!
