The Easton Area School District (EASD) remains committed to providing students with an environment for optimal intellectual, social, and emotional growth. Heavy consumption of alcohol by students poses risks to their ability to function effectively in a demanding educational setting and can interfere with the health and safety of all members of Easton-area communities. EASD has sought to address the problem of high-risk and underage alcohol consumption through the implementation of best practices as recommended by agencies such as the National Institute of Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism (NIAAA) and the Pennsylvania Liquor Control Board (PLCB). These organizations’ recommendations have been supported robustly by contemporary research. Best practices have recommended a three-in-one approach whereas strategic areas of focus include the entire student body, at-risk individuals, and environmental factors. EASD forged a partnership with important local partners including Lafayette College, Communities That Care, Valley Youth House, The Weller Health Education Center, and ALERT Partnerships so as to create a viable network to enable the implementation of a three-in-one approach.

The Easton Area School District recognizes that student wellness and proper nutrition are related to students’ physical well-being, growth, development and readiness to learn. The School Board is committed to providing a school environment that promotes student wellness, proper nutrition, nutrition education, and regular physical activity as part of the total learning experience. In a healthy school environment, students will learn about and participate in positive dietary and lifestyle practices that have been shown to improve student achievement.
Habits and practices related to physical activity, eating, and tobacco use are influenced by the entire school environment. That’s why the School Health Index has eight different modules, which correspond to the eight components of a coordinated school health program, shown here. Click to view larger image.
EASD Alcohol Oversight Committee
FROM THE CDC:
Alcohol use by persons under age 21 years is a major public health problem.1 Alcohol is the most commonly used and abused drug among youth in the United States, more than tobacco and illicit drugs. Although drinking by persons under the age of 21 is illegal, people aged 12 to 20 years drink 11% of all alcohol consumed in the United States.2 More than 90% of this alcohol is consumed in the form of binge drinks.2 On average, underage drinkers consume more drinks per drinking occasion than adult drinkers.3 In 2005, there were more than 145,000 emergency rooms visits by youth 12 to 20 years for injuries and other conditions linked to alcohol.4

A Summit on Underage Drinking was recently held at Lafayette College. Participants from local school districts discussed their efforts to effectively communicate to students, parents, and the community about teen drinking. Attending the event were high school administrators, counselors, SADD Advisors and students, as well as Diana Heckman (ALERT) , DR. Silvestri (Lafayette College), and event organizer Patty Schultz. Dr. Greenfield, Nan Sell Parry, and Kerri Leonard Ellison spoke to the group about the Alcohol Oversight Committee and the Social Norms Campaign being held at the High School.
